The following cell phone and GPS tracking/phone watch information is included in the Palisades School Guide on page 7:

CELL PHONES - The Palisades staff does not encourage students to bring cell phones since they can end up being more of a distraction for students (texting, taking photos, using Apps, etc.). However, students are permitted to bring cell phones (as per CUSD Board Policy 5141.2) for emergency use, but they must be turned off and kept in a backpack or pants pocket at all times while on campus during the school day. An earthquake, fire, etc. is considered an emergency. Forgetting to bring homework or being benched is not considered an emergency. Parents and students are responsible for lost or stolen cell phones. Students may not take photos or do audio/video recording with cell phones.

GPS TRACKING/PHONE WATCHES - GPS tracking/phone watches can be worn on a student’s wrist at school but must be off at all times.”

Spring Testing Overview - California 3rd - 5th grade students will once again be participating in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) in the Spring. CAASPP is the State’s academic testing program and includes the computer-adaptive Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA), California Alternate Assessment (CAA), and the new California Science Test (CAST). It is a system intended to provide information that can be used to monitor student progress on an annual basis and ensure that all students leave high school ready for college and career. Palisades 3rd - 5th grade students will take the SBA or CAA. In addition, 5th grade students will take the CAST. Palisades teachers have been preparing students for these assessments throughout the year by implementing the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in their curriculum. Students in grades 3-5 have also been given an opportunity to practice these tests at school. The administration of the actual tests take place in late April and early May. Teachers will provide exact testing dates to parents/guardians in the near future. Parents/guardians can help by making sure their child has a good night’s sleep before each testing day, and a healthy breakfast the morning of each assessment.

Spring Testing Parent Resources - Click here if you would like to provide additional opportunities for your 3rd - 5th grade child to practice the CAASPP tests prior to the actual administration. Click on “Student Interface Practice” and “Training Tests.” Click here for test resources from the California Department of Education, click here for test resources from the California PTA, and click here for test resources from CUSD. Results from CAASPP testing this Spring will be available next Fall, except for CAST. The 2016-17 administration of CAST is considered a pilot and results will not be available. Results from the other CAASPP assessments will be mailed home and available through the Aeries Parent Portal. The Palisades staff is available to support parents, guardians, and students. Joyce Toledo, our School Counselor, is also available to help alleviate any testing anxiety students may experience. Her e-mail is jatoledo@capousd.org. Please do not hesitate to reach out to the Palisades staff if you have any questions or concerns.

Waiver for Step It Up - A completed 2016-17 school year PTA waiver is required for children to participate in PTA sponsored activities such as Step It Up. Many families completed waivers for their children at the beginning of the school year or right before the Color Run back in October. PTA waivers will be sent home with students this week. Completed waivers need to be turned in to each child’s teacher by Thursday, March 16th. Click here to review, print, and complete a waiver. Email PTA President Christine Blanchard at Blanchard2113@gmail.com if you think that you completed a waiver and want to verify that one is on file for your child.

Step It Up Times on Friday, March 17th - Below are the times that students will be participating in Step It Up on Friday, March 17th.

Preschool*/Kindergarten: 9:15am to 10:30am
*Parents of Preschoolers: Check with your teacher for specific times.

1st & 2nd Grade: 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

3rd, 4th, & 5th Grade: 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Step It Up Info for March 17th - Step It Up, which replaces the PTA sponsored Jog-a-thon, will be held for all preschool through 5th grade students during the school day on Friday, March 17th on the lower area field. Instead of running laps, all students will have “tons of fun” on March 17th to play and exercise on a variety of large Step It Up inflatables, such as the Adrenaline Rush, Human Hamster, and Maze Runner. Parents/guardians are invited to come out and cheer for our Wave students!

Making a Donations - Step It Up is a major fundraiser for the Palisades PTA to help pay for PTA sponsored programs such as field trips, assemblies, technology, and Meet the Masters. Families can still bring in donations! Online donations are no longer being accepted. However, families and friends can still make donations by bringing in checks marked “Palisades PTA’ with “Step It Up” in the subject line of the check.

The concept of a growth mindset was developed by Professor of Psychology at Stanford University Carol Dweck and was popularized in her book titled Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. In recent years, many educators have started using her theories to guide student instruction. A mindset is a self-perception that people hold about themselves. Believing that you are either “intelligent” or “unintelligent” is a simple example of a mindset. People may also have a mindset related their their personal or professional lives, such as “I’m a great artist” or “I’m not coordinated.” People can be aware or unaware of their mindsets, according to Dr. Dweck, but they can have a profound effect on learning achievement, skill acquisition, personal relationships, professional success, and many other dimensions of life. Our goal at Palisades is to help students have a growth mindset!

Many teachers at Palisades are having students do coding. What is coding? Coding is what makes it possible for us to create computer software, apps, and websites. Why should students spend time coding? Learning coding at a young age helps children solve everyday problems while incorporating reading, math, patience, and critical thinking. Students who know how to code will also be able to communicate across countries and cultures, be innovative, and solve problems more efficiently. Click here to have your child try various one-hour tutorials such as Star Wars: Building a Galaxy with Code,  Moana: Wayfinding with Code, and Minecraft Hour of Code. These free online coding activities are designed for all ages and are being used in over 180 countries.

During the first week of school an envelope was sent home with each student asking parents/guardians to confirm their data in the Parent/Student Portal.  Along with this envelope a letter was also sent home with each student’s ID# and verification code. These items are necessary when setting up a Parent/Student Portal account. It is very important for every Palisades Wave family to confirm that your data is accurate. Updated phone numbers and contact information are the tools the Palisades staff uses to contact you during the school year, especially if there is an emergency. Please make sure that your information is up to date on your Parent/Student Portal account. Thank you for your time and support!

•    The following is from an article titled "Importance of Creativity" from crayola.com: “Creative people invent, imagine, problem-solve, create, and communicate in fresh, new ways. Every business requires creative thinkers in the form of scientists, engineers, medical researchers, technology innovators, business entrepreneurs, artists, performers, writers and illustrators, designers, inventors, educators and parents. Those with the ability to ‘think outside of the box’ will lead the future and make special things happen.”

Our theme at Palisades for the 2016-17 school year is “Creativity Across the Curriculum.” Creativity fosters deeper learning, builds confidence and creates a student ready for college/trade school and career. “Creativity is intelligence having fun,” stated Albert Einstein. Physician, psychologist, author, and inventor Dr. Edward de Bono is widely regarded as one of the foremost experts in the fields of creativity. “There is no doubt that creativity is the most important human resource of all. Without creativity, there would be no progress, and we would be forever repeating the same patterns,” states Dr. de Bono. Let’s foster creativity in our Palisades Wave students!

Keep in mind that we all want each child to arrive safely each morning and to be picked up safely after school each day. Please follow the traffic and parking lot rules listed below in order to maintain a safe environment.
•    Staff members will supervise children and adults in the parking lot before and after school. Obey any directions given by staff members who are on duty in the parking lot.
•    Due to limited spots, the parking lot is for staff members only. There are a few handicap spots and one visitor spot.
•    Via Sacramento, on the side of the school, is for loading and unloading from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Individuals driving a vehicle must remain in their car while in the drop-off and pick-up areas on Via Sacramento. Drivers parking or leaving their cars in this area during these times may risk being cited by the Sheriff’s Department. Vehicles can park on Via Sacramento after these times.
•    Students can also be dropped off and picked up along Camino Capistrano and Avenida Las Palmas.
•    All pedestrians are to use the sidewalks and designated crosswalks. Crossing guards, funded by the City of Dana Point, are located before and after school at Via Sacramento & Via Gomez and at Camino Capistrano & Avenida Las Palmas.
•    Drive slowly in the neighborhood and around Palisades School.
•    Only park in designated areas along the side streets and respect our neighbors by not blocking driveways in the neighborhood.
•    Do not stop or park in the red zone areas by the school.
•    Avoid double parking or stopping in the middle of the street to drop off and/or pick up your child, especially on Via Gomez since this street tends to have heavy traffic before and after school due to the crosswalk at the corner of Via Gomez and Via Sacramento. Please use other streets whenever possible before and after school, such as Via Espinoza, Via San Juan, and Via Sacramento.
•    Do not talk on a cell phone while dropping off or picking up your child to avoid being distracted.
•    If another family member, friend, or neighbor is picking up your child, please remind them of Palisades’ traffic and safety rules.

Through the Honor Roll School program, CBEE identifies and recognizes higher performing schools in the state, particularly higher poverty schools that are closing achievement gaps. The CBEE Honor Roll is the only school recognition program in the state solely using student achievement outcomes as the criteria and is a growing resource for all schools to learn about best practices that increase student achievement.
